Thank you, Peter Morris, for sharing that link. I remember coming across it in my research, and I realize that there was little Memorial University could do to Chandra without compromising themselves in the process. Part of my point in sharing the story of Ranjit Chandra is to illustrate for people that there is no incentive for anyone that has the power to do so to call attention to scientific fraud. It would look bad for the university; it would look bad for the profession; it would be bad all around. As a consequence of this, there is a strong temptation to "let things be" even if corruption is discovered, and, though I have no idea what the alternative should be, I think people should be aware of what the reality is now.

Lesley,

Thank you for your support! :) Yeah, for a lot of the stuff I write about, my jaw has to get picked up off the floor quite a bit, so I know what you mean... But then I write about it and just take it for granted after a while that this is the way the world is. We can only change it if we first become aware of it...

Thanks for commenting. :)

As soon as I pick my jaw up off of the floor, I'll get right behind you. Let me know what I can do. I'm shocked, outraged, and more than a little sick to my stomach.

Memorial University of Newfoundland, where Dr. Chandra was employed prior to his retirement in 2002, has developed a comprehensive web site with information about this issue. Among other data, it includes detailed information about the various investigations that were conducted into Dr. Chandra's research practices and a comprehensive bibliography of Dr. Chandra's publications.

It is available here:

Nice post. That's an interesting question, who still takes his work seriously. I wish I knew.

Kristin,

I'm LOL-ing my ass off over here at your last comment... But yes, you're right about public outrage. Yup. I'm trying to do what I can to find out more. It's a very slow process. But you're definitely right about making it public. Ranjit Chandra is known in Canada now (and only then in certain circles) because the documentary that exposes him was made and shown in Canada. You can find it on the internet and watch it yourself no matter where in the world you are.

It's called "The Secret Life of Dr. Chandra" and it can be found here: http://www.cbc.ca/national/news/chandra/. Just click on the link that says "Video." The video requires Windows Media Player, I believe. The documentary is in three parts, and the transcript is available on the page I linked to. It's very compelling, meticulously researched, and verifiable, and I used a lot of it to reference this post. I'm glad you read it, so now you know.
