I remember coming across it in my research, and I realize that there was little Memorial University could do to Chandra without compromising themselves in the process. Part of my point in sharing the story of Ranjit Chandra is to illustrate for people that there is no incentive for anyone that has the power to do so to call attention to scientific fraud. It would look bad for the university; it would look bad for the profession; it would be bad all around. As a consequence of this, there is a strong temptation to "let things be" even if corruption is discovered, and, though I have no idea what the alternative should be, I think people should be aware of what the reality is now.
